هُود

أَلَٓرَ كِتَٰبٌ أُحْكِمَتْ ءَايَٰتُهُ ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتْ مِن لَّدُنْ حَكِيمٍ خَبِيرٍ﴿1﴾

ألر كتب أحكمت ءايته ثم فصلت من لدن حكيم خبير

Alif Lām Ra. This is a Book whose verses are perfected, then fully explained, from One Who is All-Wise, All-Aware.

أَلَّا تَعْبُدُواْ إِلَّا اَللَّهَ إِنَّنِي لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٞ وَبَشِيرٞ﴿2﴾

ألا تعبدوا إلا الله إنني لكم منه نذير وبشير

[Say O Prophet], “Worship none except Allah. Indeed, I am sent to you from Him, as a warner and bearer of glad tidings.

وَأَنِ اِسْتَغْفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُواْ إِلَيْهِ يُمَتِّعْكُم مَّتَٰعاً حَسَناً إِلَىٰ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمّىٗ وَيُؤْتِ كُلَّ ذِي فَضْلٖ فَضْلَهُ وَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ فَإِنِّيَ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٖ كَبِيرٍ﴿3﴾

وأن استغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا إليه يمتعكم متعا حسنا إلى أجل مسمى ويؤت كل ذي فضل فضله وإن تولوا فإني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم كبير

And seek your Lord’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance, He will grant you good enjoyment of life for an appointed term and graciously reward the doers of good. But if you turn away, I truly fear for you the punishment of a great Day.

إِلَى اَللَّهِ مَرْجِعُكُمْ وَهْوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٖ قَدِيرٌ﴿4﴾

إلى الله مرجعكم وهو على كل شيء قدير

To Allah is your return, and He is Most Capable of all things.”

أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُواْ مِنْهُ أَلَا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ إِنَّهُ عَلِيمُ بِذَاتِ اِلصُّدُورِ﴿5﴾

ألا إنهم يثنون صدورهم ليستخفوا منه ألا حين يستغشون ثيابهم يعلم ما يسرون وما يعلنون إنه عليم بذات الصدور

Indeed, they lean forward to conceal their feelings from Him, but even when they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows what they conceal and what they reveal, for He is All-Knowing of what is in the hearts.

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٖ فِي اِلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى اَللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا وَيَعْلَمُ مُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا كُلّٞ فِي كِتَٰبٖ مُّبِينٖ﴿6﴾

وما من دابة في الأرض إلا على الله رزقها ويعلم مستقرها ومستودعها كل في كتب مبين

There is no moving creature on earth but upon Allah is its provision. He knows its place of dwelling and its place of rest; everything is [written] in a clear Record.

وَهْوَ اَلذِي خَلَقَ اَلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٖ وَكَانَ عَرْشُهُ عَلَى اَلْمَآءِ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلاٗ وَلَئِن قُلْتَ إِنَّكُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ مِن بَعْدِ اِلْمَوْتِ لَيَقُولَنَّ اَلذِينَ كَفَرُواْ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٞ مُّبِينٞ﴿7﴾

وهو الذي خلق السموت والأرض في ستة أيام وكان عرشه على الماء ليبلوكم أيكم أحسن عملا ولئن قلت إنكم مبعوثون من بعد الموت ليقولن الذين كفروا إن هذا إلا سحر مبين

It is He Who created the heavens and earth in six Days – and His Throne was upon the water – so that He may test you as to which of you is best in deed. But if you say to them, “You will certainly be raised after death,” the disbelievers will surely say, “This is nothing but clear magic!”

وَلَئِنْ أَخَّرْنَا عَنْهُمُ اُلْعَذَابَ إِلَىٰ أُمَّةٖ مَّعْدُودَةٖ لَّيَقُولُنَّ مَا يَحْبِسُهُ أَلَا يَوْمَ يَأْتِيهِمْ لَيْسَ مَصْرُوفاً عَنْهُمْ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ﴿8﴾

ولئن أخرنا عنهم العذاب إلى أمة معدودة ليقولن ما يحبسه ألا يوم يأتيهم ليس مصروفا عنهم وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزءون

If We delay their punishment for a limited time, they will surely say, “What is holding it back?” Indeed, the day when it comes upon them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be encompassed by what they used to ridicule.

وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَا اَلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنَّا رَحْمَةٗ ثُمَّ نَزَعْنَٰهَا مِنْهُ إِنَّهُ لَيَـُٔوسٞ كَفُورٞ﴿9﴾

ولئن أذقنا الإنسن منا رحمة ثم نزعنها منه إنه ليـوس كفور

If We give man a taste of Our mercy, then take it away from him, he becomes utterly despaired and ungrateful.

وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَٰهُ نَعْمَآءَ بَعْدَ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ ذَهَبَ اَلسَّيِّـَٔاتُ عَنِّيَ إِنَّهُ لَفَرِحٞ فَخُورٌ﴿10﴾

ولئن أذقنه نعماء بعد ضراء مسته ليقولن ذهب السيـات عني إنه لفرح فخور

But if We give him a taste of prosperity after being afflicted with hardship, he will surely say, “All my ills are gone,” and he becomes exultant and boastful,

إِلَّا اَلذِينَ صَبَرُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ اُلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٞ وَأَجْرٞ كَبِيرٞ﴿11﴾

إلا الذين صبروا وعملوا الصلحت أولئك لهم مغفرة وأجر كبير

except those who are patient and do righteous deeds; it is they who will have forgiveness and a great reward.

فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكُ بَعْضَ مَا يُوحَىٰ إِلَيْكَ وَضَآئِقُ بِهِ صَدْرُكَ أَنْ يَّقُولُواْ لَوْلَا أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ كَنزٌ أَوْ جَآءَ مَعَهُ مَلَكٌ إِنَّمَا أَنتَ نَذِيرٞ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٖ وَكِيلٌ﴿12﴾

فلعلك تارك بعض ما يوحى إليك وضائق به صدرك أن يقولوا لولا أنزل عليه كنز أو جاء معه ملك إنما أنت نذير والله على كل شيء وكيل

Perhaps you may disregard some of what is revealed to you [O Prophet], and may feel distressed because they say, “Why has not a treasure been sent down to him, or why has not an angel come with him?” You are only a warner, and Allah is in charge of all things.

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ اَفْتَرَيٰهُ قُلْ فَأْتُواْ بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٖ مِّثْلِهِ مُفْتَرَيَٰتٖ وَادْعُواْ مَنِ اِسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن دُونِ اِللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ﴿13﴾

أم يقولون افتريه قل فأتوا بعشر سور مثله مفتريت وادعوا من استطعتم من دون الله إن كنتم صدقين

Or do they say, “He has fabricated it”? Say, “Then produce ten fabricated Chapters like it and seek help from whoever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful!”

فَإِلَّمْ يَسْتَجِيبُواْ لَكُمْ فَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّمَا أُنزِلَ بِعِلْمِ اِللَّهِ وَأَن لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ﴿14﴾

فإلم يستجيبوا لكم فاعلموا أنما أنزل بعلم الله وأن لا إله إلا هو فهل أنتم مسلمون

But if they do not respond to you, then know that it has been revealed with the knowledge of Allah and that none has the right to be worshiped except Him. Will you then submit to Him [as Muslims]?

مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ اُلْحَيَوٰةَ اَلدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا نُوَفِّ إِلَيْهِمْ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ فِيهَا وَهُمْ فِيهَا لَا يُبْخَسُونَ﴿15﴾

من كان يريد الحيوة الدنيا وزينتها نوف إليهم أعملهم فيها وهم فيها لا يبخسون

Those who seek the life of this world and its splendor, We will repay them in full in this life for their deeds, and nothing will be diminished from them therein.

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ اَلذِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِي اِلْأٓخِرَةِ إِلَّا اَلنَّارُ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُواْ فِيهَا وَبَٰطِلٞ مَّا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ﴿16﴾

أولئك الذين ليس لهم في الأخرة إلا النار وحبط ما صنعوا فيها وبطل ما كانوا يعملون

It is they who will have nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire. All their efforts will be worthless, and all their deeds will be futile.

أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّهِ وَيَتْلُوهُ شَاهِدٞ مِّنْهُ وَمِن قَبْلِهِ كِتَٰبُ مُوسَىٰ إِمَاماٗ وَرَحْمَةً أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَمَنْ يَّكْفُرْ بِهِ مِنَ اَلْأَحْزَابِ فَالنَّارُ مَوْعِدُهُ فَلَا تَكُ فِي مِرْيَةٖ مِّنْهُ إِنَّهُ اُلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ اَلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ﴿17﴾

أفمن كان على بينة من ربه ويتلوه شاهد منه ومن قبله كتب موسى إماما ورحمة أولئك يؤمنون به ومن يكفر به من الأحزاب فالنار موعده فلا تك في مرية منه إنه الحق من ربك ولكن أكثر الناس لا يؤمنون

Can they be like those who are upon clear proof from their Lord, backed by a witness [i.e., Gabriel] from Him, and before it was the Book of Moses a guide and mercy? Such people believe in it. But whoever of the factions disbelieves in it, the Fire will be their promised end. So have no doubt about it, for it is the truth from your Lord, but most people do not believe.

وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ اِفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى اَللَّهِ كَذِباً أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ وَيَقُولُ اُلْأَشْهَٰدُ هَٰؤُلَآءِ اِلذِينَ كَذَبُواْ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ أَلَا لَعْنَةُ اُللَّهِ عَلَى اَلظَّٰلِمِينَ﴿18﴾

ومن أظلم ممن افترى على الله كذبا أولئك يعرضون على ربهم ويقول الأشهد هؤلاء الذين كذبوا على ربهم ألا لعنة الله على الظلمين

Who does greater wrong than he who fabricates lies against Allah? Such people will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, “These are the ones who lied against their Lord.” Indeed, Allah’s curse is upon the wrongdoers,

اَلذِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اِللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجاٗ وَهُم بِالْأٓخِرَةِ هُمْ كَٰفِرُونَ﴿19﴾

الذين يصدون عن سبيل الله ويبغونها عوجا وهم بالأخرة هم كفرون

those who hinder [people] from the way of Allah, seeking to make it crooked, and they disbelieve in the Hereafter.”

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَمْ يَكُونُواْ مُعْجِزِينَ فِي اِلْأَرْضِ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ اِللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَآءَ يُضَٰعَفُ لَهُمُ اُلْعَذَابُ مَا كَانُواْ يَسْتَطِيعُونَ اَلسَّمْعَ وَمَا كَانُواْ يُبْصِرُونَ﴿20﴾

أولئك لم يكونوا معجزين في الأرض وما كان لهم من دون الله من أولياء يضعف لهم العذاب ما كانوا يستطيعون السمع وما كانوا يبصرون

They will have no escape on earth, nor will they have any protector besides Allah. Their punishment will be doubled, for they failed to hear or see [the truth].

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ اَلذِينَ خَسِرُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يَفْتَرُونَ﴿21﴾

أولئك الذين خسروا أنفسهم وضل عنهم ما كانوا يفترون

It is they who destroyed themselves, and all what they fabricated will be lost from them.

لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي اِلْأٓخِرَةِ هُمُ اُلْأَخْسَرُونَ﴿22﴾

لا جرم أنهم في الأخرة هم الأخسرون

There is no doubt that they will be the worst losers in the Hereafter.

إِنَّ اَلذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ اُلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَأَخْبَتُواْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ اُلْجَنَّةِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ﴿23﴾

إن الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت وأخبتوا إلى ربهم أولئك أصحب الجنة هم فيها خلدون

Those who believe, do righteous deeds and humble themselves before their Lord, it is they who are the people of Paradise, they will abide therein forever.

مَثَلُ اُلْفَرِيقَيْنِ كَالْأَعْمَىٰ وَالْأَصَمِّ وَالْبَصِيرِ وَالسَّمِيعِ هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَٰنِ مَثَلاً أَفَلَا تَذَّكَّرُونَ﴿24﴾

مثل الفريقين كالأعمى والأصم والبصير والسميع هل يستوين مثلا أفلا تذكرون

The similitude of the two parties is that of the blind and deaf, compared to the seeing and hearing. Are they equal? Will you not then take heed?

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحاً إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٌ﴿25﴾

ولقد أرسلنا نوحا إلى قومه إني لكم نذير مبين

We sent Noah to his people [and he said], “I am indeed a clear warner to you,

أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُواْ إِلَّا اَللَّهَ إِنِّيَ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ أَلِيمٖ﴿26﴾

أن لا تعبدوا إلا الله إني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم أليم

that you worship none except Allah. I truly fear for you the punishment of a painful Day.”

فَقَالَ اَلْمَلَأُ اُلذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن قَوْمِهِ مَا نَرَيٰكَ إِلَّا بَشَراٗ مِّثْلَنَا وَمَا نَرَيٰكَ اَتَّبَعَكَ إِلَّا اَلذِينَ هُمْ أَرَاذِلُنَا بَادِيَ اَلرَّأْيِ وَمَا نَرَىٰ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا مِن فَضْلِ بَلْ نَظُنُّكُمْ كَٰذِبِينَ﴿27﴾

فقال الملأ الذين كفروا من قومه ما نريك إلا بشرا مثلنا وما نريك اتبعك إلا الذين هم أراذلنا بادي الرأي وما نرى لكم علينا من فضل بل نظنكم كذبين

But the chiefs of his people who disbelieved said, “We only see you as a human being like ourselves, and we do not see those who follow you except the lowest among us apparently. We do not see you superior to us, rather, we think that you are liars.”

قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ أَرَٰيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّي وَءَاتَيٰنِي رَحْمَةٗ مِّنْ عِندِهِ فَعَمِيَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا وَأَنتُمْ لَهَا كَٰرِهُونَ﴿28﴾

قال يقوم أريتم إن كنت على بينة من ربي وءاتيني رحمة من عنده فعميت عليكم أنلزمكموها وأنتم لها كرهون

He said, “O my people, what do you think, if I should have a clear proof from my Lord, and He has bestowed mercy upon me from Himself, but you fail to see it, can we force you to accept it despite your aversion to it?

وَيَٰقَوْمِ لَا أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مَالاً إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَى اَللَّهِ وَمَا أَنَا بِطَارِدِ اِلذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ إِنَّهُم مُّلَٰقُواْ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَٰكِنِّيَ أَرَيٰكُمْ قَوْماٗ تَجْهَلُونَ﴿29﴾

ويقوم لا أسـلكم عليه مالا إن أجري إلا على الله وما أنا بطارد الذين ءامنوا إنهم ملقوا ربهم ولكني أريكم قوما تجهلون

O my people, I do not ask you for any wealth in return for it; my reward is only with Allah. I will not dismiss those who believe; they will surely meet their Lord, but I see that you are ignorant people.

وَيَٰقَوْمِ مَنْ يَّنصُرُنِي مِنَ اَللَّهِ إِن طَرَدتُّهُمْ أَفَلَا تَذَّكَّرُونَ﴿30﴾

ويقوم من ينصرني من الله إن طردتهم أفلا تذكرون

O my people, who would protect me from Allah if I were to dismiss them? Will you not then take heed?

وَلَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ عِندِي خَزَآئِنُ اُللَّهِ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ اُلْغَيْبَ وَلَا أَقُولُ إِنِّي مَلَكٞ وَلَا أَقُولُ لِلذِينَ تَزْدَرِي أَعْيُنُكُمْ لَنْ يُّؤْتِيَهُمُ اُللَّهُ خَيْراً اِللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا فِي أَنفُسِهِمْ إِنِّيَ إِذاٗ لَّمِنَ اَلظَّٰلِمِينَ﴿31﴾

ولا أقول لكم عندي خزائن الله ولا أعلم الغيب ولا أقول إني ملك ولا أقول للذين تزدري أعينكم لن يؤتيهم الله خيرا الله أعلم بما في أنفسهم إني إذا لمن الظلمين

I do not tell you that I have Allah’s treasures or that I know the unseen, nor do I say that I am an angel. Nor do I say about those whom you look down upon, that Allah will never grant them any good, for Allah knows best what is in their hearts. If I did so, I would surely be one of the wrongdoers.”

قَالُواْ يَٰنُوحُ قَدْ جَٰدَلْتَنَا فَأَكْثَرْتَ جِدَٰلَنَا فَأْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَا إِن كُنتَ مِنَ اَلصَّٰدِقِينَ﴿32﴾

قالوا ينوح قد جدلتنا فأكثرت جدلنا فأتنا بما تعدنا إن كنت من الصدقين

They said, “O Noah, you have argued far too much with us, so bring what you are threatening us with, if you are one of the truthful.”

قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَأْتِيكُم بِهِ اِللَّهُ إِن شَآءَ وَمَا أَنتُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ﴿33﴾

قال إنما يأتيكم به الله إن شاء وما أنتم بمعجزين

He said, “It is only Allah Who can bring it upon you if He wills, then you will have no escape.

وَلَا يَنفَعُكُمْ نُصْحِيَ إِنْ أَرَدتُّ أَنْ أَنصَحَ لَكُمْ إِن كَانَ اَللَّهُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُّغْوِيَكُمْ هُوَ رَبُّكُمْ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ﴿34﴾

ولا ينفعكم نصحي إن أردت أن أنصح لكم إن كان الله يريد أن يغويكم هو ربكم وإليه ترجعون

Nor will my advice benefit you – no matter how hard I try – if Allah wills to leave you astray. He is your Lord, and to Him you will be returned.”

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ اَفْتَرَيٰهُ قُلْ إِنِ اِفْتَرَيْتُهُ فَعَلَيَّ إِجْرَامِي وَأَنَا بَرِيٓءٞ مِّمَّا تُجْرِمُونَ﴿35﴾

أم يقولون افتريه قل إن افتريته فعلي إجرامي وأنا بريء مما تجرمون

Or do they say that he has fabricated it”? Say [O Prophet], “If I did fabricate it, then I am responsible for my sin, but I am innocent of the sins you commit.”

وَأُوحِيَ إِلَىٰ نُوحٍ أَنَّهُ لَنْ يُّؤْمِنَ مِن قَوْمِكَ إِلَّا مَن قَدْ ءَامَنَ فَلَا تَبْتَئِسْ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَفْعَلُونَ﴿36﴾

وأوحي إلى نوح أنه لن يؤمن من قومك إلا من قد ءامن فلا تبتئس بما كانوا يفعلون

It was revealed to Noah, “None of your people will ever believe except those who have already believed. So do not grieve over what they do.

وَاصْنَعِ اِلْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا وَلَا تُخَٰطِبْنِي فِي اِلذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ إِنَّهُم مُّغْرَقُونَ﴿37﴾

واصنع الفلك بأعيننا ووحينا ولا تخطبني في الذين ظلموا إنهم مغرقون

Construct the Ark under Our [watchful] Eyes and Our direction, and do not plead with Me for those who did wrong, for they will surely be drowned.”

وَيَصْنَعُ اُلْفُلْكَ وَكُلَّمَا مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ مَلَأٞ مِّن قَوْمِهِ سَخِرُواْ مِنْهُ قَالَ إِن تَسْخَرُواْ مِنَّا فَإِنَّا نَسْخَرُ مِنكُمْ كَمَا تَسْخَرُونَ﴿38﴾

ويصنع الفلك وكلما مر عليه ملأ من قومه سخروا منه قال إن تسخروا منا فإنا نسخر منكم كما تسخرون

So he started constructing the Ark, and every time some chiefs of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, “If you ridicule us now, we will soon ridicule you as you are ridiculing us.

فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ يَّأْتِيهِ عَذَابٞ يُخْزِيهِ وَيَحِلُّ عَلَيْهِ عَذَابٞ مُّقِيمٌ﴿39﴾

فسوف تعلمون من يأتيه عذاب يخزيه ويحل عليه عذاب مقيم

You will come to know who will be afflicted with a disgracing punishment, and upon whom will descend an everlasting punishment.”

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَا أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ اَلتَّنُّورُ قُلْنَا اَحْمِلْ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجَيْنِ اِثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ اِلْقَوْلُ وَمَنْ ءَامَنَ وَمَا ءَامَنَ مَعَهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلٞ﴿40﴾

حتى إذا جا أمرنا وفار التنور قلنا احمل فيها من كل زوجين اثنين وأهلك إلا من سبق عليه القول ومن ءامن وما ءامن معه إلا قليل

When Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, “Take on board a pair from every species and your family – except those who have already been decreed [to drown] – and those who believe.” But none believed with him except a few.

وَقَالَ اَرْكَبُواْ فِيهَا بِسْمِ اِللَّهِ مُجْرَيٰهَا وَمُرْسَيٰهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي لَغَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ﴿41﴾

وقال اركبوا فيها بسم الله مجريها ومرسيها إن ربي لغفور رحيم

Noah said, “Board it; in the name of Allah it sails and anchors. My Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

وَهْيَ تَجْرِي بِهِمْ فِي مَوْجٖ كَالْجِبَالِ وَنَادَىٰ نُوحٌ اِبْنَهُ وَكَانَ فِي مَعْزِلٖ يَٰبُنَيِّ اِرْكَب مَّعَنَا وَلَا تَكُن مَّعَ اَلْكَٰفِرِينَ﴿42﴾

وهي تجري بهم في موج كالجبال ونادى نوح ابنه وكان في معزل يبني اركب معنا ولا تكن مع الكفرين

As it sailed with them through waves like mountains, Noah called out to his son, who had kept himself apart, “O my son, come aboard with us, and do not be with the disbelievers.”

قَالَ سَـَٔاوِي إِلَىٰ جَبَلٖ يَعْصِمُنِي مِنَ اَلْمَآءِ قَالَ لَا عَٰصِمَ اَلْيَوْمَ مِنْ أَمْرِ اِللَّهِ إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ وَحَالَ بَيْنَهُمَا اَلْمَوْجُ فَكَانَ مِنَ اَلْمُغْرَقِينَ﴿43﴾

قال سـاوي إلى جبل يعصمني من الماء قال لا عصم اليوم من أمر الله إلا من رحم وحال بينهما الموج فكان من المغرقين

He said, “I will take shelter on a mountain which will save me from the water.” Noah said, “Today no one will be saved from Allah’s punishment except those on whom He may have mercy.” Thereupon the waves came between them, and he was among those who were drowned.

وَقِيلَ يَٰأَرْضُ اُبْلَعِي مَآءَكِ وَيَٰسَمَآءُ اَقْلِعِي وَغِيضَ اَلْمَآءُ وَقُضِيَ اَلْأَمْرُ وَاسْتَوَتْ عَلَى اَلْجُودِيِّ وَقِيلَ بُعْداٗ لِّلْقَوْمِ اِلظَّٰلِمِينَ﴿44﴾

وقيل يأرض ابلعي ماءك ويسماء اقلعي وغيض الماء وقضي الأمر واستوت على الجودي وقيل بعدا للقوم الظلمين

And it was said, “O earth, swallow up your water. O sky, withhold [your rain]!” The water subsided and the command was fulfilled, and the Ark settled on Mount Judi, and it was said, “Away with the wrongdoing people!”

وَنَادَىٰ نُوحٞ رَّبَّهُ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ اَبْنِي مِنْ أَهْلِي وَإِنَّ وَعْدَكَ اَلْحَقُّ وَأَنتَ أَحْكَمُ اُلْحَٰكِمِينَ﴿45﴾

ونادى نوح ربه فقال رب إن ابني من أهلي وإن وعدك الحق وأنت أحكم الحكمين

Noah called out to his Lord, saying, “My Lord, my son is one of my family, and Your promise is true and You are the Most Just of all judges!”

قَالَ يَٰنُوحُ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ إِنَّهُ عَمَلٌ غَيْرُ صَٰلِحٖ فَلَا تَسْـَٔلَنِّ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ إِنِّيَ أَعِظُكَ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ اَلْجَٰهِلِينَ﴿46﴾

قال ينوح إنه ليس من أهلك إنه عمل غير صلح فلا تسـلن ما ليس لك به علم إني أعظك أن تكون من الجهلين

Allah said, “O Noah, he is not of your family, for he was not righteous in his conduct. So do not ask Me of what you have no knowledge. I admonish you, so you do not be among the ignorant.”

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّيَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَسْـَٔلَكَ مَا لَيْسَ لِي بِهِ عِلْمٞ وَإِلَّا تَغْفِرْ لِي وَتَرْحَمْنِي أَكُن مِّنَ اَلْخَٰسِرِينَ﴿47﴾

قال رب إني أعوذ بك أن أسـلك ما ليس لي به علم وإلا تغفر لي وترحمني أكن من الخسرين

Noah said, “My Lord, I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. Unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers.”

قِيلَ يَٰنُوحُ اُهْبِطْ بِسَلَٰمٖ مِّنَّا وَبَرَكَٰتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ أُمَمٖ مِّمَّن مَّعَكَ وَأُمَمٞ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُم مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ﴿48﴾

قيل ينوح اهبط بسلم منا وبركت عليك وعلى أمم ممن معك وأمم سنمتعهم ثم يمسهم منا عذاب أليم

It was said, “O Noah, disembark with peace from Us, and with blessings upon you and upon some nations [descending] from those who are with you. As for other nations, We will grant them enjoyment for a while, then they will be afflicted with a painful punishment from Us.”

تِلْكَ مِنْ أَنبَآءِ اِلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهَا إِلَيْكَ مَا كُنتَ تَعْلَمُهَا أَنتَ وَلَا قَوْمُكَ مِن قَبْلِ هَٰذَا فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ اَلْعَٰقِبَةَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ﴿49﴾

تلك من أنباء الغيب نوحيها إليك ما كنت تعلمها أنت ولا قومك من قبل هذا فاصبر إن العقبة للمتقين

This is one of the stories of the unseen that we reveal to you [O Prophet]; neither you nor your people knew it before this. So be patient; the outcome is for the righteous.

وَإِلَىٰ عَادٍ أَخَاهُمْ هُوداٗ قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ اِعْبُدُواْ اُللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ إِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا مُفْتَرُونَ﴿50﴾

وإلى عاد أخاهم هودا قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من إله غيره إن أنتم إلا مفترون

To the people of ‘Ād We sent their brother Hūd. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no god other than Him. You are but fabricators.

يَٰقَوْمِ لَا أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْراً إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَى اَلذِي فَطَرَنِيَ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ﴿51﴾

يقوم لا أسـلكم عليه أجرا إن أجري إلا على الذي فطرني أفلا تعقلون

O my people, I ask you no reward for it. My reward is only with the One Who created me. Do you not then understand?

وَيَٰقَوْمِ اِسْتَغْفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُواْ إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ اِلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَاراٗ وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَىٰ قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوْاْ مُجْرِمِينَ﴿52﴾

ويقوم استغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا إليه يرسل السماء عليكم مدرارا ويزدكم قوة إلى قوتكم ولا تتولوا مجرمين

O my people, seek forgiveness of your Lord and turn to Him in repentance; He will send down upon you abundant rain from the sky and will add strength to your strength. So do not turn away in wickedness.”

قَالُواْ يَٰهُودُ مَا جِئْتَنَا بِبَيِّنَةٖ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَارِكِي ءَالِهَتِنَا عَن قَوْلِكَ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿53﴾

قالوا يهود ما جيتنا ببينة وما نحن بتاركي ءالهتنا عن قولك وما نحن لك بمؤمنين

They said, “O Hūd, you have not brought us any clear evidence, and we will not forsake our gods on account of what you say, nor will we believe in you.

إِن نَّقُولُ إِلَّا اَعْتَرَيٰكَ بَعْضُ ءَالِهَتِنَا بِسُوٓءٖ قَالَ إِنِّيَ أُشْهِدُ اُللَّهَ وَاشْهَدُواْ أَنِّي بَرِيٓءٞ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ مِن دُونِهِ فَكِيدُونِي جَمِيعاٗ ثُمَّ لَا تُنظِرُونِ﴿54﴾

إن نقول إلا اعتريك بعض ءالهتنا بسوء قال إني أشهد الله واشهدوا أني بريء مما تشركون من دونه فكيدوني جميعا ثم لا تنظرون

All we can say is that some of our gods have afflicted you with madness.” He said, “I take Allah as a Witness, and you too be witnesses, that I disown whatever you associate

إِنِّي تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اَللَّهِ رَبِّي وَرَبِّكُم مَّا مِن دَآبَّةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ ءَاخِذُ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٖ مُّسْتَقِيمٖ﴿55﴾

إني توكلت على الله ربي وربكم ما من دابة إلا هو ءاخذ بناصيتها إن ربي على صرط مستقيم

with Him. So plot against me all together, then give me no respite.

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ فَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُم مَّا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ رَبِّي قَوْماً غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّونَهُ شَئْاً إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَفِيظٞ﴿56﴾

فإن تولوا فقد أبلغتكم ما أرسلت به إليكم ويستخلف ربي قوما غيركم ولا تضرونه شيا إن ربي على كل شيء حفيظ

I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no moving creature but He holds it by its forelock. My Lord is on a straight path.

وَلَمَّا جَا أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا هُوداٗ وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٖ مِّنَّا وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُم مِّنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٖ﴿57﴾

ولما جا أمرنا نجينا هودا والذين ءامنوا معه برحمة منا ونجينهم من عذاب غليظ

But if you turn away, I have conveyed to you what I have been sent with. My Lord will replace you with other people, and you cannot harm Him in the least. My Lord watches over all things.”

وَتِلْكَ عَادٞ جَحَدُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَعَصَوْاْ رُسُلَهُ وَاتَّبَعُواْ أَمْرَ كُلِّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيدٖ﴿58﴾

وتلك عاد جحدوا بـايت ربهم وعصوا رسله واتبعوا أمر كل جبار عنيد

When Our command came, We saved Hūd and those who believed with him by Our mercy, and We saved them from a harsh punishment.

وَأُتْبِعُواْ فِي هَٰذِهِ اِلدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةٗ وَيَوْمَ اَلْقِيَٰمَةِ أَلَا إِنَّ عَاداٗ كَفَرُواْ رَبَّهُمْ أَلَا بُعْداٗ لِّعَادٖ قَوْمِ هُودٖ﴿59﴾

وأتبعوا في هذه الدنيا لعنة ويوم القيمة ألا إن عادا كفروا ربهم ألا بعدا لعاد قوم هود

Such were the people of ‘Ād, who denied the signs of their Lord, disobeyed His Messengers and followed the command of every obstinate oppressor.

وَإِلَىٰ ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمْ صَٰلِحاٗ قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ اِعْبُدُواْ اُللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ هُوَ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ اَلْأَرْضِ وَاسْتَعْمَرَكُمْ فِيهَا فَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ ثُمَّ تُوبُواْ إِلَيْهِ إِنَّ رَبِّي قَرِيبٞ مُّجِيبٞ﴿60﴾

وإلى ثمود أخاهم صلحا قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من إله غيره هو أنشأكم من الأرض واستعمركم فيها فاستغفروه ثم توبوا إليه إن ربي قريب مجيب

They were overtaken by a curse in this world and again on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, ‘Ād denied their Lord; so away with ‘Ād, the people of Hūd!

قَالُواْ يَٰصَٰلِحُ قَدْ كُنتَ فِينَا مَرْجُوّاٗ قَبْلَ هَٰذَا أَتَنْهَيٰنَا أَن نَّعْبُدَ مَا يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَا وَإِنَّنَا لَفِي شَكّٖ مِّمَّا تَدْعُونَا إِلَيْهِ مُرِيبٖ﴿61﴾

قالوا يصلح قد كنت فينا مرجوا قبل هذا أتنهينا أن نعبد ما يعبد ءاباؤنا وإننا لفي شك مما تدعونا إليه مريب

To the people of Thamūd, We sent their brother Sālih. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no god except Him. It is He Who brought you into being from the earth and settled you therein. So seek His forgiveness then turn to Him in repentance, for My Lord is Ever Near, All-Responsive.”

قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ أَرَٰيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّي وَءَاتَيٰنِي مِنْهُ رَحْمَةٗ فَمَنْ يَّنصُرُنِي مِنَ اَللَّهِ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُ فَمَا تَزِيدُونَنِي غَيْرَ تَخْسِيرٖ﴿62﴾

قال يقوم أريتم إن كنت على بينة من ربي وءاتيني منه رحمة فمن ينصرني من الله إن عصيته فما تزيدونني غير تخسير

They said, “O Sālih, we truly had hopes in you before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers used to worship? We are in disturbing doubt about what you are calling us to.”

وَيَٰقَوْمِ هَٰذِهِ نَاقَةُ اُللَّهِ لَكُمْ ءَايَةٗ فَذَرُوهَا تَأْكُلْ فِي أَرْضِ اِللَّهِ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٖ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابٞ قَرِيبٞ﴿63﴾

ويقوم هذه ناقة الله لكم ءاية فذروها تأكل في أرض الله ولا تمسوها بسوء فيأخذكم عذاب قريب

He said, “O my people, what do you think, if I should have clear proof from my Lord, and He has bestowed mercy upon me from Himself, who could protect me from Allah if I were to disobey Him? You would only increase me in loss.

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَقَالَ تَمَتَّعُواْ فِي دَارِكُمْ ثَلَٰثَةَ أَيَّامٖ ذَٰلِكَ وَعْدٌ غَيْرُ مَكْذُوبٖ﴿64﴾

فعقروها فقال تمتعوا في داركم ثلثة أيام ذلك وعد غير مكذوب

O my people, this she-camel of Allah is a sign to you; so leave her to graze in Allah’s land, and do not touch her with harm, or else an imminent punishment will overtake you.”

فَلَمَّا جَا أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا صَٰلِحاٗ وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٖ مِّنَّا وَمِنْ خِزْيِ يَوْمَئِذٍ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَلْقَوِيُّ اُلْعَزِيزُ﴿65﴾

فلما جا أمرنا نجينا صلحا والذين ءامنوا معه برحمة منا ومن خزي يومئذ إن ربك هو القوي العزيز

But they hamstrung her, so he said, “Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is an unfailing promise!”

وَأَخَذَ اَلذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ اُلصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُواْ فِي دِيَٰرِهِمْ جَٰثِمِينَ﴿66﴾

وأخذ الذين ظلموا الصيحة فأصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين

So when Our command came, We saved Sālih and those who believed with him, by Our mercy, and from the disgrace of that day. Your Lord is the All-Powerful, the All-Mighty.

كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْاْ فِيهَا أَلَا إِنَّ ثَمُوداٗ كَفَرُواْ رَبَّهُمْ أَلَا بُعْداٗ لِّثَمُودَ﴿67﴾

كأن لم يغنوا فيها ألا إن ثمودا كفروا ربهم ألا بعدا لثمود

The huge blast seized those who did wrong, and they fell dead in their homes,

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَا إِبْرَٰهِيمَ بِالْبُشْرَىٰ قَالُواْ سَلَٰماٗ قَالَ سَلَٰمٞ فَمَا لَبِثَ أَن جَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ حَنِيذٖ﴿68﴾

ولقد جاءت رسلنا إبرهيم بالبشرى قالوا سلما قال سلم فما لبث أن جاء بعجل حنيذ

as though they had never lived there. Indeed, Thamūd denied their Lord; so away with Thamūd!

فَلَمَّا رَءَا أَيْدِيَهُمْ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ نَكِرَهُمْ وَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةٗ قَالُواْ لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّا أُرْسِلْنَا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِ لُوطٖ﴿69﴾

فلما رءا أيديهم لا تصل إليه نكرهم وأوجس منهم خيفة قالوا لا تخف إنا أرسلنا إلى قوم لوط

Our messengers came to Abraham with glad tidings. They said, “Peace.” He said, “Peace.” And in a short while he brought a roasted calf.

وَامْرَأَتُهُ قَآئِمَةٞ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَٰهَا بِإِسْحَٰقَ وَمِنْ وَّرَآ إِسْحَٰقَ يَعْقُوبُ﴿70﴾

وامرأته قائمة فضحكت فبشرنها بإسحق ومن ورا إسحق يعقوب

When he saw their hands not reaching the food, he became suspicious and felt scared of them. They said, “Do not be scared. We have been sent to the people of Lot.”

قَالَتْ يَٰوَيْلَتَىٰ ءَٰالِدُ وَأَنَا عَجُوزٞ وَهَٰذَا بَعْلِي شَيْخاً إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَيْءٌ عَجِيبٞ﴿71﴾

قالت يويلتى ءالد وأنا عجوز وهذا بعلي شيخا إن هذا لشيء عجيب

His wife was standing by and laughed after We gave her glad tidings of [the birth of] Isaac and Jacob after Isaac.

قَالُواْ أَتَعْجَبِينَ مِنْ أَمْرِ اِللَّهِ رَحْمَتُ اُللَّهِ وَبَرَكَٰتُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ اَلْبَيْتِ إِنَّهُ حَمِيدٞ مَّجِيدٞ﴿72﴾

قالوا أتعجبين من أمر الله رحمت الله وبركته عليكم أهل البيت إنه حميد مجيد

She said, “Alas for me! How can I bear a child while I am an old woman, and this is my husband, an old man? This is a strange thing indeed!”

فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ عَنْ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ اَلرَّوْعُ وَجَآءَتْهُ اُلْبُشْرَىٰ يُجَٰدِلُنَا فِي قَوْمِ لُوطٍ﴿73﴾

فلما ذهب عن إبرهيم الروع وجاءته البشرى يجدلنا في قوم لوط

They said, “Are you amazed at the decree of Allah? May Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you, O people of the house. He is Praiseworthy, All-Glorious.”

إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَحَلِيمٌ أَوَّٰهٞ مُّنِيبٞ﴿74﴾

إن إبرهيم لحليم أوه منيب

When the shock of fear left Abraham and the glad tidings [of Isaac’s birth] came to him, he started pleading with Us concerning the people of Lot.

يَٰإِبْرَٰهِيمُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَٰذَا إِنَّهُ قَدْ جَا أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ وَإِنَّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِمْ عَذَابٌ غَيْرُ مَرْدُودٖ﴿75﴾

يإبرهيم أعرض عن هذا إنه قد جا أمر ربك وإنهم ءاتيهم عذاب غير مردود

Abraham was indeed forbearing, tenderhearted, and constantly returning in repentance.

وَلَمَّا جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطاٗ سيٓءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعاٗ وَقَالَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيبٞ﴿76﴾

ولما جاءت رسلنا لوطا سيء بهم وضاق بهم ذرعا وقال هذا يوم عصيب

[The angels said], “O Abraham, leave this, for indeed the command of your Lord has already come to pass, and there will come upon them a punishment that cannot be averted.”

وَجَآءَهُ قَوْمُهُ يُهْرَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ وَمِن قَبْلُ كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ اَلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ هَٰؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِي هُنَّ أَطْهَرُ لَكُمْ فَاتَّقُواْ اُللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ فِي ضَيْفِيَ أَلَيْسَ مِنكُمْ رَجُلٞ رَّشِيدٞ﴿77﴾

وجاءه قومه يهرعون إليه ومن قبل كانوا يعملون السيـات قال يقوم هؤلاء بناتي هن أطهر لكم فاتقوا الله ولا تخزون في ضيفي أليس منكم رجل رشيد

When Our messengers came to Lot, he was perturbed and felt troubled on their account, and said, “This is a distressing day.”

قَالُواْ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا لَنَا فِي بَنَاتِكَ مِنْ حَقّٖ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ﴿78﴾

قالوا لقد علمت ما لنا في بناتك من حق وإنك لتعلم ما نريد

His people came rushing to him, and they were accustomed to committing evil deeds. He said, “O my people, here are my daughters [for marriage]; they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not a right-minded man among you?”

قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِي بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ ءَاوِي إِلَىٰ رُكْنٖ شَدِيدٖ﴿79﴾

قال لو أن لي بكم قوة أو ءاوي إلى ركن شديد

They said, “You already know that we have no need for your daughters, and you surely know what we want!”

قَالُواْ يَٰلُوطُ إِنَّا رُسُلُ رَبِّكَ لَنْ يَّصِلُواْ إِلَيْكَ فَاسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٖ مِّنَ اَليْلِ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا اَمْرَأَتَكَ إِنَّهُ مُصِيبُهَا مَا أَصَابَهُمْ إِنَّ مَوْعِدَهُمُ اُلصُّبْحُ أَلَيْسَ اَلصُّبْحُ بِقَرِيبٖ﴿80﴾

قالوا يلوط إنا رسل ربك لن يصلوا إليك فاسر بأهلك بقطع من اليل ولا يلتفت منكم أحد إلا امرأتك إنه مصيبها ما أصابهم إن موعدهم الصبح أليس الصبح بقريب

He said, “Would that I had some strength [to stop you] or could rely on a mighty support!”

فَلَمَّا جَا أَمْرُنَا جَعَلْنَا عَٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا حِجَارَةٗ مِّن سِجِّيلٖ﴿81﴾

فلما جا أمرنا جعلنا عليها سافلها وأمطرنا عليها حجارة من سجيل

[The angels said], “O Lot, we are messengers of your Lord; they can never reach you. So set out with your family in the dark part of the night, and none of you should look back, except your wife; she will suffer the same fate as the others. Their appointed time is the morning; is not the morning near?”

مَّنضُودٖ مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ وَمَا هِيَ مِنَ اَلظَّٰلِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٖ﴿82﴾

منضود مسومة عند ربك وما هي من الظلمين ببعيد

When Our command came, We turned their cities upside down and rained down upon them clustered stones of baked clay,

وَإِلَىٰ مَدْيَنَ أَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْباٗ قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ اِعْبُدُواْ اُللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ وَلَا تَنقُصُواْ اُلْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ إِنِّيَ أَرَيٰكُم بِخَيْرٖ وَإِنِّيَ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٖ مُّحِيطٖ﴿83﴾

وإلى مدين أخاهم شعيبا قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من إله غيره ولا تنقصوا المكيال والميزان إني أريكم بخير وإني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم محيط

marked by your Lord; this is not far from the evildoers.

وَيَٰقَوْمِ أَوْفُواْ اُلْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تَبْخَسُواْ اُلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْاْ فِي اِلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ﴿84﴾

ويقوم أوفوا المكيال والميزان بالقسط ولا تبخسوا الناس أشياءهم ولا تعثوا في الأرض مفسدين

And to the people of Midian We sent their brother Shu‘ayb. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no god besides Him. Do not give short measure or weight. I see that you are in prosperity, but I fear for you the punishment of an encompassing Day.

بَقِيَّتُ اُللَّهِ خَيْرٞ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ﴿85﴾

بقيت الله خير لكم إن كنتم مؤمنين

O my people, give full measure and weight with justice and do not defraud people of their dues, nor go about spreading corruption on earth.

وَمَا أَنَا عَلَيْكُم بِحَفِيظٖ﴿86﴾

وما أنا عليكم بحفيظ

What remains from the provision of Allah is far better, if you are [true] believers; I am not a keeper over you.”

قَالُواْ يَٰشُعَيْبُ أَصَلَوَٰتُكَ تَأْمُرُكَ أَن نَّتْرُكَ مَا يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَا أَوْ أَن نَّفْعَلَ فِي أَمْوَٰلِنَا مَا نَشَٰٓؤُاْ اِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ اَلْحَلِيمُ اُلرَّشِيدُ﴿87﴾

قالوا يشعيب أصلوتك تأمرك أن نترك ما يعبد ءاباؤنا أو أن نفعل في أمولنا ما نشؤا انك لأنت الحليم الرشيد

They said, “O Shu‘ayb, does your prayer command you that we should forsake what our forefathers worshiped, or that we should give up dealing with our wealth as we please? Indeed, you are such a forbearing and right-minded man!”

قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ أَرَٰيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّي وَرَزَقَنِي مِنْهُ رِزْقاً حَسَناٗ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُخَالِفَكُمْ إِلَىٰ مَا أَنْهَيٰكُمْ عَنْهُ إِنْ أُرِيدُ إِلَّا اَلْإِصْلَٰحَ مَا اَسْتَطَعْتُ وَمَا تَوْفِيقِيَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَإِلَيْهِ أُنِيبُ﴿88﴾

قال يقوم أريتم إن كنت على بينة من ربي ورزقني منه رزقا حسنا وما أريد أن أخالفكم إلى ما أنهيكم عنه إن أريد إلا الإصلح ما استطعت وما توفيقي إلا بالله عليه توكلت وإليه أنيب

He said, “O my people, what do you think, if I should have a clear proof from my Lord, and He has given me good provision from Himself. I do not want to go against what I am forbidding you. I only want to put things right to the best of my ability. My success only comes through Allah; in Him I put my trust and to Him I turn.

وَيَٰقَوْمِ لَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شِقَاقِيَ أَنْ يُّصِيبَكُم مِّثْلُ مَا أَصَابَ قَوْمَ نُوحٍ أَوْ قَوْمَ هُودٍ أَوْ قَوْمَ صَٰلِحٖ وَمَا قَوْمُ لُوطٖ مِّنكُم بِبَعِيدٖ﴿89﴾

ويقوم لا يجرمنكم شقاقي أن يصيبكم مثل ما أصاب قوم نوح أو قوم هود أو قوم صلح وما قوم لوط منكم ببعيد

O my people, do not let your opposition to me cause you to suffer a punishment similar to that of the people of Noah, the people of Hūd or the people of Sālih. And the people of Lot are not far away from you.

وَاسْتَغْفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُواْ إِلَيْهِ إِنَّ رَبِّي رَحِيمٞ وَدُودٞ﴿90﴾

واستغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا إليه إن ربي رحيم ودود

Seek forgiveness of your Lord and turn to Him in repentance. Indeed, My Lord is Most Merciful, Most Affectionate.”

قَالُواْ يَٰشُعَيْبُ مَا نَفْقَهُ كَثِيراٗ مِّمَّا تَقُولُ وَإِنَّا لَنَرَيٰكَ فِينَا ضَعِيفاٗ وَلَوْلَا رَهْطُكَ لَرَجَمْنَٰكَ وَمَا أَنتَ عَلَيْنَا بِعَزِيزٖ﴿91﴾

قالوا يشعيب ما نفقه كثيرا مما تقول وإنا لنريك فينا ضعيفا ولولا رهطك لرجمنك وما أنت علينا بعزيز

They said, “O Shu‘ayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and we surely see you weak among us. Were it not for your clan, we would have surely stoned you, for you have no standing among us.”

قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ أَرَهْطِيَ أَعَزُّ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ اَللَّهِ وَاتَّخَذتُّمُوهُ وَرَآءَكُمْ ظِهْرِيّاً إِنَّ رَبِّي بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطٞ﴿92﴾

قال يقوم أرهطي أعز عليكم من الله واتخذتموه وراءكم ظهريا إن ربي بما تعملون محيط

He said, “O my people, does my clan have a higher status to you than Allah? And you have abandoned Him behind your backs. Indeed, my Lord encompasses all what you do.

وَيَٰقَوْمِ اِعْمَلُواْ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنِّي عَٰمِلٞ سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ يَّأْتِيهِ عَذَابٞ يُخْزِيهِ وَمَنْ هُوَ كَٰذِبٞ وَارْتَقِبُواْ إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ رَقِيبٞ﴿93﴾

ويقوم اعملوا على مكانتكم إني عمل سوف تعلمون من يأتيه عذاب يخزيه ومن هو كذب وارتقبوا إني معكم رقيب

O my people, do whatever you can; I will do mine. You will come to know who will receive a disgracing punishment, and who is a liar. Wait; I too am waiting with you.”

وَلَمَّا جَا أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا شُعَيْباٗ وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٖ مِّنَّا وَأَخَذَتِ اِلذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ اُلصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُواْ فِي دِيَٰرِهِمْ جَٰثِمِينَ﴿94﴾

ولما جا أمرنا نجينا شعيبا والذين ءامنوا معه برحمة منا وأخذت الذين ظلموا الصيحة فأصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين

When Our command came, We saved Shu‘ayb and those who believed with him by Our mercy. But the huge blast seized the wrongdoers, so they fell dead in their homes,

كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْاْ فِيهَا أَلَا بُعْداٗ لِّمَدْيَنَ كَمَا بَعِدَتْ ثَمُودُ﴿95﴾

كأن لم يغنوا فيها ألا بعدا لمدين كما بعدت ثمود

as if they had never dwelt there. Behold, away with Midian just as it was with Thamūd!

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَسُلْطَٰنٖ مُّبِينٍ﴿96﴾

ولقد أرسلنا موسى بـايتنا وسلطن مبين

And We sent Moses with Our signs and compelling proof

إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِيْهِ فَاتَّبَعُواْ أَمْرَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَا أَمْرُ فِرْعَوْنَ بِرَشِيدٖ﴿97﴾

إلى فرعون وملإيه فاتبعوا أمر فرعون وما أمر فرعون برشيد

to Pharaoh and his courtiers, but they followed the command of Pharaoh, even though the command of Pharaoh was misguided.

يَقْدُمُ قَوْمَهُ يَوْمَ اَلْقِيَٰمَةِ فَأَوْرَدَهُمُ اُلنَّارَ وَبِئْسَ اَلْوِرْدُ اُلْمَوْرُودُ﴿98﴾

يقدم قومه يوم القيمة فأوردهم النار وبيس الورد المورود

He will be at the forefront of his people on the Day of Resurrection, leading them into the Fire. What a terrible place to be led to!

وَأُتْبِعُواْ فِي هَٰذِهِ لَعْنَةٗ وَيَوْمَ اَلْقِيَٰمَةِ بِئْسَ اَلرِّفْدُ اُلْمَرْفُودُ﴿99﴾

وأتبعوا في هذه لعنة ويوم القيمة بيس الرفد المرفود

They were pursued by a curse in this world as well as on the Day of Resurrection. What a terrible gift to receive!

ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنبَآءِ اِلْقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّهُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهَا قَآئِمٞ وَحَصِيدٞ﴿100﴾

ذلك من أنباء القرى نقصه عليك منها قائم وحصيد

These are some of the stories of the towns that We relate to you; some are still standing, while others have been mowed down.

وَمَا ظَلَمْنَٰهُمْ وَلَٰكِن ظَلَمُواْ أَنفُسَهُمْ فَمَا أَغْنَتْ عَنْهُمْ ءَالِهَتُهُمُ اُلتِي يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ اِللَّهِ مِن شَيْءٖ لَّمَّا جَا أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ وَمَا زَادُوهُمْ غَيْرَ تَتْبِيبٖ﴿101﴾

وما ظلمنهم ولكن ظلموا أنفسهم فما أغنت عنهم ءالهتهم التي يدعون من دون الله من شيء لما جا أمر ربك وما زادوهم غير تتبيب

We did not wrong them, rather they wronged themselves. Their gods whom they invoked besides Allah were of no avail to them in the least when the command of your Lord came, and they only added to their destruction.

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَا أَخَذَ اَلْقُرَىٰ وَهْيَ ظَالِمَةٌ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُ أَلِيمٞ شَدِيدٌ﴿102﴾

وكذلك أخذ ربك إذا أخذ القرى وهي ظالمة إن أخذه أليم شديد

Such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns that are given to wrongdoing; His seizing is surely painful and severe.

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةٗ لِّمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ اَلْأٓخِرَةِ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٞ مَّجْمُوعٞ لَّهُ اُلنَّاسُ وَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٞ مَّشْهُودٞ﴿103﴾

إن في ذلك لأية لمن خاف عذاب الأخرة ذلك يوم مجموع له الناس وذلك يوم مشهود

Indeed, there is a sign in this for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which people will be gathered and a Day that will be witnessed.

وَمَا نُؤَخِّرُهُ إِلَّا لِأَجَلٖ مَّعْدُودٖ﴿104﴾

وما نؤخره إلا لأجل معدود

We only delay it until a fixed term.

يَوْمَ يَأْتِ لَا تَكَلَّمُ نَفْسٌ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِيّٞ وَسَعِيدٞ﴿105﴾

يوم يأت لا تكلم نفس إلا بإذنه فمنهم شقي وسعيد

When that Day comes, no one will speak except by His permission. Some among them will be wretched and others blissful.

فَأَمَّا اَلذِينَ شَقُواْ فَفِي اِلنَّارِ لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٞ وَشَهِيقٌ﴿106﴾

فأما الذين شقوا ففي النار لهم فيها زفير وشهيق

As for those who are wretched, they will be in the Fire, wherein they will be moaning and gasping,

خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ اِلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَالْأَرْضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ فَعَّالٞ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ﴿107﴾

خلدين فيها ما دامت السموت والأرض إلا ما شاء ربك إن ربك فعال لما يريد

they will abide therein for as long as the heavens and earth exist, except what your Lord wills; your Lord does what He wills.

وَأَمَّا اَلذِينَ سَعِدُواْ فَفِي اِلْجَنَّةِ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ اِلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَالْأَرْضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَ عَطَآءً غَيْرَ مَجْذُوذٖ﴿108﴾

وأما الذين سعدوا ففي الجنة خلدين فيها ما دامت السموت والأرض إلا ما شاء ربك عطاء غير مجذوذ

As for those who are destined for bliss, they will be in Paradise abiding therein as long as the heavens and earth exist, except what your Lord wills – an unceasing gift.

فَلَا تَكُ فِي مِرْيَةٖ مِّمَّا يَعْبُدُ هَٰؤُلَآءِ مَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا كَمَا يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُهُم مِّن قَبْلُ وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنقُوصٖ﴿109﴾

فلا تك في مرية مما يعبد هؤلاء ما يعبدون إلا كما يعبد ءاباؤهم من قبل وإنا لموفوهم نصيبهم غير منقوص

Have no doubt about what they worship; they only worship what their forefathers worshiped. We will surely give them their full share undiminished.

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى اَلْكِتَٰبَ فَاخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٞ سَبَقَتْ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَفِي شَكّٖ مِّنْهُ مُرِيبٖ﴿110﴾

ولقد ءاتينا موسى الكتب فاختلف فيه ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك لقضي بينهم وإنهم لفي شك منه مريب

We gave Moses the Scripture, but a dispute arose about it. If it had not been for a prior decree from your Lord, the matter would have been decided between them. They are indeed in a disquieting doubt about it.

وَإِن كُلّاٗ لَّمَا لَيُوَفِّيَنَّهُمْ رَبُّكَ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ إِنَّهُ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٞ﴿111﴾

وإن كلا لما ليوفينهم ربك أعملهم إنه بما يعملون خبير

Your Lord will surely pay everyone in full for their deeds, for He is All-Aware of what they do.

فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْاْ إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٞ﴿112﴾

فاستقم كما أمرت ومن تاب معك ولا تطغوا إنه بما تعملون بصير

So stay on a straight path as you have been commanded, along with those who repented with you, and do not cross the limits. Indeed, He is All-Seeing of what you do.

وَلَا تَرْكَنُواْ إِلَى اَلذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ فَتَمَسَّكُمُ اُلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ اِللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَآءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ﴿113﴾

ولا تركنوا إلى الذين ظلموا فتمسكم النار وما لكم من دون الله من أولياء ثم لا تنصرون

Do not incline to the wrongdoers, or else the Fire will seize you. Then you will have no protectors besides Allah, nor will you be helped.

وَأَقِمِ اِلصَّلَوٰةَ طَرَفَيِ اِلنَّهَارِ وَزُلَفاٗ مِّنَ اَليْلِ إِنَّ اَلْحَسَنَٰتِ يُذْهِبْنَ اَلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ذَٰلِكَ ذِكْرَىٰ لِلذَّٰكِرِينَ﴿114﴾

وأقم الصلوة طرفي النهار وزلفا من اليل إن الحسنت يذهبن السيـات ذلك ذكرى للذكرين

Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at some hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds wipe out evil deeds. This is a reminder for those who are mindful.

وَاصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ اَللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ اَلْمُحْسِنِينَ﴿115﴾

واصبر فإن الله لا يضيع أجر المحسنين

And be patient, for indeed Allah does not let the reward of those who do good to go to waste.

فَلَوْلَا كَانَ مِنَ اَلْقُرُونِ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ أُوْلُواْ بَقِيَّةٖ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ اِلْفَسَادِ فِي اِلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا قَلِيلاٗ مِّمَّنْ أَنجَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَاتَّبَعَ اَلذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مَا أُتْرِفُواْ فِيهِ وَكَانُواْ مُجْرِمِينَ﴿116﴾

فلولا كان من القرون من قبلكم أولوا بقية ينهون عن الفساد في الأرض إلا قليلا ممن أنجينا منهم واتبع الذين ظلموا ما أترفوا فيه وكانوا مجرمين

If only there had been among the generations before you righteous people who would forbid others from spreading corruption in the land, except a few of them whom We saved. But the wrongdoers pursued their luxury which they were given therein, and they were wicked.

وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ لِيُهْلِكَ اَلْقُرَىٰ بِظُلْمٖ وَأَهْلُهَا مُصْلِحُونَ﴿117﴾

وما كان ربك ليهلك القرى بظلم وأهلها مصلحون

Your Lord would never destroy the towns unjustly while their people were acting righteously.

وَلَوْ شَآءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ اَلنَّاسَ أُمَّةٗ وَٰحِدَةٗ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ مُخْتَلِفِينَ إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ رَبُّكَ وَلِذَٰلِكَ خَلَقَهُمْ وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ اَلْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ﴿118﴾

ولو شاء ربك لجعل الناس أمة وحدة ولا يزالون مختلفين إلا من رحم ربك ولذلك خلقهم وتمت كلمة ربك لأملأن جهنم من الجنة والناس أجمعين

If your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind a single community, but they will not cease to differ,

وَكُلّاٗ نَّقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنبَآءِ اِلرُّسُلِ مَا نُثَبِّتُ بِهِ فُؤَادَكَ وَجَآءَكَ فِي هَٰذِهِ اِلْحَقُّ وَمَوْعِظَةٞ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿119﴾

وكلا نقص عليك من أنباء الرسل ما نثبت به فؤادك وجاءك في هذه الحق وموعظة وذكرى للمؤمنين

except those whom Allah has given mercy, and for this He created them, and the word of your Lord will be fulfilled: “I will certainly fill Hell with jinn and humans all together.”

وَقُل لِّلذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ اَعْمَلُواْ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنَّا عَٰمِلُونَ وَانتَظِرُواْ إِنَّا مُنتَظِرُونَ﴿120﴾

وقل للذين لا يؤمنون اعملوا على مكانتكم إنا عملون وانتظروا إنا منتظرون

We relate to you [O Prophet] the stories of the messengers to strengthen your heart. And there has come to you in this the truth, an admonition and a reminder to the believers.

وَلِلهِ غَيْبُ اُلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ يُرْجَعُ اُلْأَمْرُ كُلُّهُ فَاعْبُدْهُ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَيْهِ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ﴿121﴾

ولله غيب السموت والأرض وإليه يرجع الأمر كله فاعبده وتوكل عليه وما ربك بغفل عما تعملون

Say to those who do not believe, “Carry on in your ways; so will we do.
