وَاليْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ﴿1﴾
واليل إذا يغشى
By the night when it covers,
وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ﴿2﴾
والنهار إذا تجلى
and by the day when it appears,
وَمَا خَلَقَ اَلذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ﴿3﴾
وما خلق الذكر والأنثى
and by His creation of male and female,
إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ﴿4﴾
إن سعيكم لشتى
surely your efforts are divergent.
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ﴿5﴾
فأما من أعطى واتقى
As for the one who gives in charity and fears Allah,
وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ﴿6﴾
وصدق بالحسنى
and truly believes in the best reward,
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ﴿7﴾
فسنيسره لليسرى
We will make easy for him the way of salvation.
وَأَمَّا مَن بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَىٰ﴿8﴾
وأما من بخل واستغنى
But as for the one who is miserly and deems himself self-sufficient,
وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ﴿9﴾
وكذب بالحسنى
and denies the best reward,
فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ﴿10﴾
فسنيسره للعسرى
We will make easy for him the way of perdition.
وَمَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ مَالُهُ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰ﴿11﴾
وما يغني عنه ماله إذا تردى
His wealth will be of no avail to him when he tumbles [into Hell].
إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ﴿12﴾
إن علينا للهدى
Indeed, it is upon Us to show the right way,
وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْأٓخِرَةَ وَالْأُولَىٰ﴿13﴾
وإن لنا للأخرة والأولى
and surely to Us belong the Hereafter and the present life.
فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَاراٗ تَلَظَّىٰ﴿14﴾
فأنذرتكم نارا تلظى
So I warn you of a raging Fire,
لَا يَصْلَيٰهَا إِلَّا اَلْأَشْقَى﴿15﴾
لا يصليها إلا الأشقى
none will enter it except the most wretched,
اَلذِي كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ﴿16﴾
الذي كذب وتولى
who denied and turned away.
وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا اَلْأَتْقَى﴿17﴾
وسيجنبها الأتقى
But the most righteous will be saved from it,
اَلذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىٰ﴿18﴾
الذي يؤتي ماله يتزكى
who spends his wealth to purify himself,
وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُ مِن نِّعْمَةٖ تُجْزَىٰ﴿19﴾
وما لأحد عنده من نعمة تجزى
not in return for someone’s favors,
إِلَّا اَبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ اِلْأَعْلَىٰ﴿20﴾
إلا ابتغاء وجه ربه الأعلى
but to seek the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High.
وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ﴿21﴾
ولسوف يرضى
He will surely be well pleased.
