المَعارج

سَالَ سَآئِلُ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ﴿1﴾

سال سائل بعذاب واقع

A challenger asked for a punishment bound to come

لِّلْكَٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٞ﴿2﴾

للكفرين ليس له دافع

upon the disbelievers, which none can avert,

مِّنَ اَللَّهِ ذِي اِلْمَعَارِجِ﴿3﴾

من الله ذي المعارج

from Allah, Lord of the pathways of ascent,

تَعْرُجُ اُلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٖ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٖ﴿4﴾

تعرج الملئكة والروح إليه في يوم كان مقداره خمسين ألف سنة

by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him on a Day the length of which is fifty thousand years.

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْراٗ جَمِيلاً﴿5﴾

فاصبر صبرا جميلا

So be patient [O Prophet] with beautiful patience.

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيداٗ﴿6﴾

إنهم يرونه بعيدا

Indeed, they see this [punishment] far off,

وَنَرَيٰهُ قَرِيباٗ﴿7﴾

ونريه قريبا

but We see it to be close at hand.

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ اُلسَّمَآءُ كَالْمُهْلِ﴿8﴾

يوم تكون السماء كالمهل

On the Day when the sky will be like molten brass

وَتَكُونُ اُلْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ﴿9﴾

وتكون الجبال كالعهن

and the mountains will be like dyed wool,

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيماٗ﴿10﴾

ولا يسـل حميم حميما

and no close friend will ask about another,

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ يَوَدُّ اُلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمَئِذِ بِبَنِيهِ﴿11﴾

يبصرونهم يود المجرم لو يفتدي من عذاب يومئذ ببنيه

even though they will see one another. The wicked will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by offering his children,

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ﴿12﴾

وصحبته وأخيه

and his wife and his brother,

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ اِلتِي تُـْٔوِيهِ﴿13﴾

وفصيلته التي تـويه

and his kindred who stood by him,

وَمَن فِي اِلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعاٗ ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ﴿14﴾

ومن في الأرض جميعا ثم ينجيه

and everyone on earth, just to save himself.

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ﴿15﴾

كلا إنها لظى

By no means! It is a raging Flame,

نَزَّاعَةٞ لِّلشَّوَىٰ﴿16﴾

نزاعة للشوى

that will strip off the scalps.

تَدْعُواْ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ﴿17﴾

تدعوا من أدبر وتولى

It will call everyone who turned their backs and disobeyed,

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ﴿18﴾

وجمع فأوعى

and amassed and hoarded wealth.

إِنَّ اَلْإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعاً﴿19﴾

إن الإنسن خلق هلوعا

Indeed, man was created impatient:

إِذَا مَسَّهُ اُلشَّرُّ جَزُوعاٗ﴿20﴾

إذا مسه الشر جزوعا

when evil befalls him, he bewails,

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ اُلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعاً﴿21﴾

وإذا مسه الخير منوعا

but when good fortune comes his way, he becomes tight-fisted –

إِلَّا اَلْمُصَلِّينَ﴿22﴾

إلا المصلين

except those who pray,

اَلذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ﴿23﴾

الذين هم على صلاتهم دائمون

who are steadfast in their prayers;

وَالذِينَ فِي أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقّٞ مَّعْلُومٞ﴿24﴾

والذين في أمولهم حق معلوم

and who give a due share of their wealth

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ﴿25﴾

للسائل والمحروم

to the beggar and the dispossessed;

وَالذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ اِلدِّينِ﴿26﴾

والذين يصدقون بيوم الدين

and who firmly believe in the Day of Judgment;

وَالذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ﴿27﴾

والذين هم من عذاب ربهم مشفقون

and those who fear the punishment of their Lord –

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٖ﴿28﴾

إن عذاب ربهم غير مأمون

for none can feel secure from their Lord’s punishment –

وَالذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَٰفِظُونَ﴿29﴾

والذين هم لفروجهم حفظون

and those who guard their private parts,

إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ﴿30﴾

إلا على أزوجهم أو ما ملكت أيمنهم فإنهم غير ملومين

except from their wives or bondwomen whom they own, for then they are not to be blamed.

فَمَنِ اِبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُلْعَادُونَ﴿31﴾

فمن ابتغى وراء ذلك فأولئك هم العادون

But whoever seeks beyond that, it is they who are the transgressors.

وَالذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ﴿32﴾

والذين هم لأمنتهم وعهدهم رعون

and those who fulfill their trusts and pledges;

وَالذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ﴿33﴾

والذين هم بشهدتهم قائمون

and who are upright in their testimonies;

وَالذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ﴿34﴾

والذين هم على صلاتهم يحافظون

and who take due care of their prayers;

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّٰتٖ مُّكْرَمُونَ﴿35﴾

أولئك في جنت مكرمون

they will be honored in gardens.

فَمَالِ اِلذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ﴿36﴾

فمال الذين كفروا قبلك مهطعين

What is the matter with the disbelievers that they are rushing towards you [O Prophet],

عَنِ اِلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ اِلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ﴿37﴾

عن اليمين وعن الشمال عزين

from the right and from the left, in crowds?

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ اُمْرِيٕٖ مِّنْهُمْ أَنْ يُّدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ﴿38﴾

أيطمع كل امري منهم أن يدخل جنة نعيم

Does everyone of them aspire to enter a garden of bliss?

كَلَّا إِنَّا خَلَقْنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ﴿39﴾

كلا إنا خلقنهم مما يعلمون

By no means! We have created them from what they know.

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ اِلْمَشَٰرِقِ وَالْمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ﴿40﴾

فلا أقسم برب المشرق والمغرب إنا لقدرون

I swear by the Lord of the sunrises and sunsets that We are surely Capable

عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْراٗ مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ﴿41﴾

على أن نبدل خيرا منهم وما نحن بمسبوقين

to replace them with others better than them, and none can escape Our decree.

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلْعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوْمَهُمُ اُلذِي يُوعَدُونَ﴿42﴾

فذرهم يخوضوا ويلعبوا حتى يلقوا يومهم الذي يوعدون

So leave them to engage in their falsehood and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised;

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ اَلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعاٗ كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نَصْبٖ يُوفِضُونَ﴿43﴾

يوم يخرجون من الأجداث سراعا كأنهم إلى نصب يوفضون

the Day when they will rush out of their graves as if they are racing towards an idol,

خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٞ ذَٰلِكَ اَلْيَوْمُ اُلذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ﴿44﴾

خشعة أبصرهم ترهقهم ذلة ذلك اليوم الذي كانوا يوعدون

with their eyes downcast and overwhelmed with disgrace. That is the Day that they were promised.
