يَٰأَيُّهَا اَلْمُدَّثِّرُ﴿1﴾
يأيها المدثر
O you covered [in your cloak],
قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ﴿2﴾
قم فأنذر
arise and warn,
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ﴿3﴾
وربك فكبر
and proclaim the greatness of your Lord,
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ﴿4﴾
وثيابك فطهر
and purify your garments,
وَالرِّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ﴿5﴾
والرجز فاهجر
and shun idol worshiping,
وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ﴿6﴾
ولا تمنن تستكثر
and do not do a favor for a greater return,
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ﴿7﴾
ولربك فاصبر
and be patient for the sake of your Lord.
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي اِلنَّاقُورِ﴿8﴾
فإذا نقر في الناقور
When the Trumpet is sounded,
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٖ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ﴿9﴾
فذلك يومئذ يوم عسير
that Day will be a difficult day,
عَلَى اَلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٖ﴿10﴾
على الكفرين غير يسير
not easy for the disbelievers.
ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيداٗ﴿11﴾
ذرني ومن خلقت وحيدا
Leave me to deal with the one whom I created lonely,
وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالاٗ مَّمْدُوداٗ﴿12﴾
وجعلت له مالا ممدودا
and gave him abundant wealth,
وَبَنِينَ شُهُوداٗ﴿13﴾
وبنين شهودا
and sons by his side,
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُ تَمْهِيداٗ﴿14﴾
ومهدت له تمهيدا
and gave him a life of comfort and power,
ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ﴿15﴾
ثم يطمع أن أزيد
yet he aspires that I should give him more.
كَلَّا إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيداٗ﴿16﴾
كلا إنه كان لأيتنا عنيدا
By no means! For he has been stubborn against Our verses.
سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُوداً﴿17﴾
سأرهقه صعودا
I will subject him to an unbearable punishment.
إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ﴿18﴾
إنه فكر وقدر
For he reflected and plotted [against the Qur’an].
فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ﴿19﴾
فقتل كيف قدر
May he perish, how he plotted!
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ﴿20﴾
ثم قتل كيف قدر
Again, may he perish, how he plotted!
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ﴿21﴾
ثم نظر
Then he looked around,
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ﴿22﴾
ثم عبس وبسر
then he frowned and scowled,
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ﴿23﴾
ثم أدبر واستكبر
then turned away with arrogance,
فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٞ يُؤْثَرُ﴿24﴾
فقال إن هذا إلا سحر يؤثر
then said, “This is nothing but magic from the past.
إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ اُلْبَشَرِ﴿25﴾
إن هذا إلا قول البشر
This is nothing but the words of a man.”
سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ﴿26﴾
سأصليه سقر
Soon I will make him burn in the Scorching Fire.
وَمَا أَدْرَيٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ﴿27﴾
وما أدريك ما سقر
How do you know what Scorching Fire is?
لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ﴿28﴾
لا تبقي ولا تذر
It leaves nothing and spares no one,
لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلْبَشَرِ﴿29﴾
لواحة للبشر
scorching the skin.
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ﴿30﴾
عليها تسعة عشر
It is overseen by nineteen [angels].
وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَٰبَ اَلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةٗ لِّلذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ اَلذِينَ أُوتُواْ اُلْكِتَٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ اَلذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ إِيمَٰناٗ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ اَلذِينَ أُوتُواْ اُلْكِتَٰبَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ اَلذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَالْكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اَللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلاٗ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اُللَّهُ مَنْ يَّشَآءُ وَيَهْدِي مَنْ يَّشَآءُ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ﴿31﴾
وما جعلنا أصحب النار إلا ملئكة وما جعلنا عدتهم إلا فتنة للذين كفروا ليستيقن الذين أوتوا الكتب ويزداد الذين ءامنوا إيمنا ولا يرتاب الذين أوتوا الكتب والمؤمنون وليقول الذين في قلوبهم مرض والكفرون ماذا أراد الله بهذا مثلا كذلك يضل الله من يشاء ويهدي من يشاء وما يعلم جنود ربك إلا هو وما هي إلا ذكرى للبشر
We have only appointed angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have only made their number as a test for the disbelievers, so that those who were given the Scripture may have certainty and the believers may increase in faith; and neither those who were given the Scripture nor the believers may have any doubts; and so that those [hypocrites] in whose hearts is sickness and the disbelievers may say, “What does Allah mean by this number?” Thus Allah causes to stray whom He wills and guides whom He wills, and none knows the soldiers of your Lord but He. This is but a reminder to mankind.
كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ﴿32﴾
كلا والقمر
No indeed! By the moon,
وَاليْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ﴿33﴾
واليل إذ أدبر
and by the night when it departs,
وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ﴿34﴾
والصبح إذا أسفر
and by the dawn when it brightens,
إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى اَلْكُبَرِ﴿35﴾
إنها لإحدى الكبر
Hellfire is indeed one of the greatest matters,
نَذِيراٗ لِّلْبَشَرِ﴿36﴾
نذيرا للبشر
a warning to mankind,
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَنْ يَّتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ﴿37﴾
لمن شاء منكم أن يتقدم أو يتأخر
to whoever among you chooses to advance or regress.
كُلُّ نَفْسِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ﴿38﴾
كل نفس بما كسبت رهينة
Every soul is held in pledge for its deeds,
إِلَّا أَصْحَٰبَ اَلْيَمِينِ﴿39﴾
إلا أصحب اليمين
except the People of the Right,
فِي جَنَّٰتٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ عَنِ اِلْمُجْرِمِينَ﴿40﴾
في جنت يتساءلون عن المجرمين
who will be in gardens, asking one another
مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ﴿41﴾
ما سلككم في سقر
about the wicked:
قَالُواْ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ اَلْمُصَلِّينَ﴿42﴾
قالوا لم نك من المصلين
“What brought you to Hell?”
وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ اُلْمِسْكِينَ﴿43﴾
ولم نك نطعم المسكين
They will say, “We were not among those who prayed,
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ اَلْخَآئِضِينَ﴿44﴾
وكنا نخوض مع الخائضين
nor did we feed the poor,
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ اِلدِّينِ﴿45﴾
وكنا نكذب بيوم الدين
and we indulged in falsehood along with those who indulged in it,
حَتَّىٰ أَتَيٰنَا اَلْيَقِينُ﴿46﴾
حتى أتينا اليقين
and we denied the Day of Judgment,
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَٰعَةُ اُلشَّٰفِعِينَ﴿47﴾
فما تنفعهم شفعة الشفعين
until the certainty [of death] came to us.”
فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ اِلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ﴿48﴾
فما لهم عن التذكرة معرضين
So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them.
كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٞ مُّسْتَنفَرَةٞ﴿49﴾
كأنهم حمر مستنفرة
Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from the Reminder,
فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةِ﴿50﴾
فرت من قسورة
as if they were terrified wild asses,
بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ اُمْرِيٕٖ مِّنْهُمْ أَنْ يُّؤْتَىٰ صُحُفاٗ مُّنَشَّرَةٗ﴿51﴾
بل يريد كل امري منهم أن يؤتى صحفا منشرة
fleeing from a lion?
كَلَّا بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ اَلْأٓخِرَةَ﴿52﴾
كلا بل لا يخافون الأخرة
In fact, each one of them desires that open [divine] letters be sent to each of them.
كَلَّا إِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٞ﴿53﴾
كلا إنه تذكرة
By no means! They rather do not fear the Hereafter.
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُ﴿54﴾
فمن شاء ذكره
No indeed! This [Qur’an] is a reminder.
وَمَا تَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَّشَآءَ اَللَّهُ هُوَ أَهْلُ اُلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ اُلْمَغْفِرَةِ﴿55﴾
وما تذكرون إلا أن يشاء الله هو أهل التقوى وأهل المغفرة
So whoever wills may take heed.
