إِذَا وَقَعَتِ اِلْوَاقِعَةُ﴿1﴾
إذا وقعت الواقعة
When the Inevitable Event comes to pass,
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَٰذِبَةٌ﴿2﴾
ليس لوقعتها كذبة
there will be none to deny its occurrence;
خَافِضَةٞ رَّافِعَةٌ﴿3﴾
خافضة رافعة
it will bring some low and raise others up.
إِذَا رُجَّتِ اِلْأَرْضُ رَجّاٗ﴿4﴾
إذا رجت الأرض رجا
When the earth is shaken violently,
وَبُسَّتِ اِلْجِبَالُ بَسّاٗ﴿5﴾
وبست الجبال بسا
and the mountains crushed to pieces,
فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءٗ مُّنبَثّاٗ﴿6﴾
فكانت هباء منبثا
and turn to scattered dust,
وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجاٗ ثَلَٰثَةٗ﴿7﴾
وكنتم أزوجا ثلثة
then you are sorted into three groups:
فَأَصْحَٰبُ اُلْمَيْمَنَةِ﴿8﴾
فأصحب الميمنة
the people of the right – how blessed will be the people of the right!
مَا أَصْحَٰبُ اُلْمَيْمَنَةِ﴿9﴾
ما أصحب الميمنة
The people of the left – how miserable will be the people of the left!
وَأَصْحَٰبُ اُلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴿10﴾
وأصحب المشـمة
And the forerunners [in faith] are the forerunners [in Paradise].
مَا أَصْحَٰبُ اُلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴿11﴾
ما أصحب المشـمة
They are the nearest ones [to Allah],
وَالسَّٰبِقُونَ اَلسَّٰبِقُونَ﴿12﴾
والسبقون السبقون
in Gardens of Bliss,
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ اَلْمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿13﴾
أولئك المقربون
many from the early generations,
فِي جَنَّٰتِ اِلنَّعِيمِ﴿14﴾
في جنت النعيم
and a few from the later generations.
ثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ اَلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿15﴾
ثلة من الأولين
[They will be seated] on jeweled couches,
وَقَلِيلٞ مِّنَ اَلْأٓخِرِينَ﴿16﴾
وقليل من الأخرين
reclining on them, facing one another.
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مَّوْضُونَةٖ﴿17﴾
على سرر موضونة
They will be served by immortal youths
مُّتَّكِـِٕينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ﴿18﴾
متكـين عليها متقبلين
with cups, pitchers, and glasses [of wine] from a flowing spring,
يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٞ مُّخَلَّدُونَ﴿19﴾
يطوف عليهم ولدن مخلدون
which will neither cause any headache nor intoxication,
بِأَكْوَابٖ وَأَبَارِيقَ﴿20﴾
بأكواب وأباريق
along with fruits of their choice,
وَكَأْسٖ مِّن مَّعِينٖ﴿21﴾
وكأس من معين
and flesh of birds that they may desire.
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزَفُونَ﴿22﴾
لا يصدعون عنها ولا ينزفون
And [they will have] maidens with wide gorgeous eyes,
وَفَٰكِهَةٖ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ﴿23﴾
وفكهة مما يتخيرون
like pristine pearls,
وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٖ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ﴿24﴾
ولحم طير مما يشتهون
as a reward for what they used to do.
وَحُورٌ عِينٞ كَأَمْثَٰلِ اِللُّؤْلُوِٕ اِلْمَكْنُونِ﴿25﴾
وحور عين كأمثل اللؤلو المكنون
They will not hear therein any idle talk or sinful speech,
جَزَآءَ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ﴿26﴾
جزاء بما كانوا يعملون
except the words of peace, peace.
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْواٗ وَلَا تَأْثِيماً﴿27﴾
لا يسمعون فيها لغوا ولا تأثيما
The people of the right – how blessed will be the people of the right!
إِلَّا قِيلاٗ سَلَٰماٗ سَلَٰماٗ﴿28﴾
إلا قيلا سلما سلما
[They will be] in the midst of thornless lote trees,
وَأَصْحَٰبُ اُلْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَٰبُ اُلْيَمِينِ﴿29﴾
وأصحب اليمين ما أصحب اليمين
and clusters of bananas,
فِي سِدْرٖ مَّخْضُودٖ﴿30﴾
في سدر مخضود
and extended shade,
وَطَلْحٖ مَّنضُودٖ﴿31﴾
وطلح منضود
and flowing water,
وَظِلّٖ مَّمْدُودٖ﴿32﴾
وظل ممدود
and abundant fruit –
وَمَآءٖ مَّسْكُوبٖ﴿33﴾
وماء مسكوب
neither ceasing nor restricted –
وَفَٰكِهَةٖ كَثِيرَةٖ﴿34﴾
وفكهة كثيرة
and elevated mattresses [on beds].
لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٖ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٖ﴿35﴾
لا مقطوعة ولا ممنوعة
Indeed, We have perfectly created them [i.e., their spouses],
وَفُرُشٖ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ﴿36﴾
وفرش مرفوعة
and have made them virgins,
إِنَّا أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءٗ﴿37﴾
إنا أنشأنهن إنشاء
loving and of equal age,
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَاراً﴿38﴾
فجعلنهن أبكارا
for the people of the right,
عُرُباً أَتْرَاباٗ﴿39﴾
عربا أترابا
many from the earlier generations,
لِّأَصْحَٰبِ اِلْيَمِينِ﴿40﴾
لأصحب اليمين
and many from the later generations.
ثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ اَلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿41﴾
ثلة من الأولين
And the people of the left – how wretched will be the people of the left!
وَثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ اَلْأٓخِرِينَ﴿42﴾
وثلة من الأخرين
[They will be] in scorching wind and scalding water,
وَأَصْحَٰبُ اُلشِّمَالِ﴿43﴾
وأصحب الشمال
in the shade of black smoke,
مَا أَصْحَٰبُ اُلشِّمَالِ﴿44﴾
ما أصحب الشمال
neither cool nor refreshing.
فِي سَمُومٖ وَحَمِيمٖ﴿45﴾
في سموم وحميم
Indeed, they used to be in luxuries before,
وَظِلّٖ مِّنْ يَّحْمُومٖ﴿46﴾
وظل من يحموم
and persisted in the gravest sin.
لَّا بَارِدٖ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ﴿47﴾
لا بارد ولا كريم
They used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, will we really be raised again?
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُواْ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ﴿48﴾
إنهم كانوا قبل ذلك مترفين
And our forefathers as well?”
وَكَانُواْ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى اَلْحِنثِ اِلْعَظِيمِ﴿49﴾
وكانوا يصرون على الحنث العظيم
Say, [O Prophet], “Indeed, the former and later generations
وَكَانُواْ يَقُولُونَ أَٰئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَاباٗ وَعِظَٰماً إِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ﴿50﴾
وكانوا يقولون أئذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما إنا لمبعوثون
will be gathered on a predetermined Day.
أَوْءَابَآؤُنَا اَلْأَوَّلُونَ﴿51﴾
أوءاباؤنا الأولون
Then you, O misguided deniers,
قُلْ إِنَّ اَلْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْأٓخِرِينَ لَمَجْمُوعُونَ﴿52﴾
قل إن الأولين والأخرين لمجموعون
will surely eat from the tree of zaqqūm,
إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٖ مَّعْلُومٖ﴿53﴾
إلى ميقت يوم معلوم
filling your bellies with it,
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا اَلضَّآلُّونَ اَلْمُكَذِّبُونَ﴿54﴾
ثم إنكم أيها الضالون المكذبون
and drinking scalding water on top of it,
لَأٓكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٖ مِّن زَقُّومٖ﴿55﴾
لأكلون من شجر من زقوم
drinking like thirsty camels do.”
فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا اَلْبُطُونَ﴿56﴾
فمالـون منها البطون
This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ اَلْحَمِيمِ﴿57﴾
فشربون عليه من الحميم
It is We Who created you; why do you not then believe [in resurrection]?
فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ اَلْهِيمِ﴿58﴾
فشربون شرب الهيم
Have you thought about the semen that you emit?
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ اَلدِّينِ﴿59﴾
هذا نزلهم يوم الدين
Is it you who create it, or is it We Who are the Creators?
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ﴿60﴾
نحن خلقنكم فلولا تصدقون
We have ordained death among you, and nothing can overcome us
أَفَرَٰيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ﴿61﴾
أفريتم ما تمنون
from transforming you and recreating you in forms that you do not know.
ءَٰانتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ اُلْخَٰلِقُونَ﴿62﴾
ءانتم تخلقونه أم نحن الخلقون
You are well aware of the first creation; why do you not then take heed?
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ اُلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ﴿63﴾
نحن قدرنا بينكم الموت وما نحن بمسبوقين
Have you thought about what you sow?
عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ﴿64﴾
على أن نبدل أمثلكم وننشيكم في ما لا تعلمون
Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who make it grow?
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ اُلنَّشْأَةَ اَلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَّكَّرُونَ﴿65﴾
ولقد علمتم النشأة الأولى فلولا تذكرون
If We willed, We could reduce your harvest to rubble, leaving you to wonder and lament,
أَفَرَٰيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ﴿66﴾
أفريتم ما تحرثون
“We suffered loss,
ءَٰانتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ اُلزَّٰرِعُونَ﴿67﴾
ءانتم تزرعونه أم نحن الزرعون
rather, we are deprived.”
لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰماٗ فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ﴿68﴾
لو نشاء لجعلنه حطما فظلتم تفكهون
Have you thought about the water that you drink?
إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ﴿69﴾
إنا لمغرمون
Is it you who bring it down from the clouds, or is it We Who bring it down?
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ﴿70﴾
بل نحن محرومون
If We willed, We could make it salty; will you not then give thanks?
أَفَرَٰيْتُمُ اُلْمَآءَ اَلذِي تَشْرَبُونَ﴿71﴾
أفريتم الماء الذي تشربون
Have you thought about the fire that you kindle?
ءَٰانتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ اَلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ اُلْمُنزِلُونَ﴿72﴾
ءانتم أنزلتموه من المزن أم نحن المنزلون
Is it you who produced its trees, or is it We Who produced it?
لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجاٗ فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ﴿73﴾
لو نشاء جعلنه أجاجا فلولا تشكرون
We made it a reminder [of the Hellfire] and a benefit for the travelers.
أَفَرَٰيْتُمُ اُلنَّارَ اَلتِي تُورُونَ﴿74﴾
أفريتم النار التي تورون
So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
ءَٰانتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا أَمْ نَحْنُ اُلْمُنشِـُٔونَ﴿75﴾
ءانتم أنشأتم شجرتها أم نحن المنشـون
I do swear by the positions of the stars –
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةٗ وَمَتَٰعاٗ لِّلْمُقْوِينَ﴿76﴾
نحن جعلنها تذكرة ومتعا للمقوين
and this is indeed a great oath, if only you knew –
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ اَلْعَظِيمِ﴿77﴾
فسبح باسم ربك العظيم
that this is indeed a noble Qur’an,
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ اِلنُّجُومِ﴿78﴾
فلا أقسم بموقع النجوم
in a well-preserved Record,
وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٞ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ﴿79﴾
وإنه لقسم لو تعلمون عظيم
that none can touch except the purified ones –
إِنَّهُ لَقُرْءَانٞ كَرِيمٞ﴿80﴾
إنه لقرءان كريم
a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
فِي كِتَٰبٖ مَّكْنُونٖ﴿81﴾
في كتب مكنون
Do you take this discourse lightly,
لَّا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا اَلْمُطَهَّرُونَ﴿82﴾
لا يمسه إلا المطهرون
and instead [of thanking Allah] for the provision you are given, you show ingratitude?
تَنزِيلٞ مِّن رَّبِّ اِلْعَٰلَمِينَ﴿83﴾
تنزيل من رب العلمين
Then why [are you helpless] when the soul reaches the throat,
أَفَبِهَٰذَا اَلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ﴿84﴾
أفبهذا الحديث أنتم مدهنون
while you are looking on,
وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ﴿85﴾
وتجعلون رزقكم أنكم تكذبون
when We are closer to him than you, but you do not see?
فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ اِلْحُلْقُومَ﴿86﴾
فلولا إذا بلغت الحلقوم
If you are not subject to retribution, then why do you not
وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٖ تَنظُرُونَ﴿87﴾
وأنتم حينئذ تنظرون
bring that [soul] back, if you are truthful?
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ﴿88﴾
ونحن أقرب إليه منكم ولكن لا تبصرون
If that dying person is one of those who will be brought near to Allah,
فَلَوْلَا إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ﴿89﴾
فلولا إن كنتم غير مدينين
then [he will have] comfort, fragrance, and a Garden of Bliss.
تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ﴿90﴾
ترجعونها إن كنتم صدقين
If he is one of the people of the right,
فَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ اَلْمُقَرَّبِينَ﴿91﴾
فأما إن كان من المقربين
[He will be told], “Peace be to you, for being one of the people of the right.”
فَرَوْحٞ وَرَيْحَانٞ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٖ﴿92﴾
فروح وريحان وجنت نعيم
But if he is one of the misguided deniers,
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ اِلْيَمِينِ﴿93﴾
وأما إن كان من أصحب اليمين
then he will be welcomed with scalding water,
فَسَلَٰمٞ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ اِلْيَمِينِ﴿94﴾
فسلم لك من أصحب اليمين
and he will burn in Blazing Fire.
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ اَلْمُكَذِّبِينَ اَلضَّآلِّينَ﴿95﴾
وأما إن كان من المكذبين الضالين
This is indeed the absolute truth.
فَنُزُلٞ مِّنْ حَمِيمٖ﴿96﴾
فنزل من حميم
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ﴿97﴾
وتصلية جحيم
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهْوَ حَقُّ اُلْيَقِينِ﴿98﴾
إن هذا لهو حق اليقين
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ اَلْعَظِيمِ﴿99﴾
فسبح باسم ربك العظيم
