عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ﴿1﴾
عبس وتولى
He frowned and turned away,
أَن جَآءَهُ اُلْأَعْمَىٰ﴿2﴾
أن جاءه الأعمى
when the blind man came to him.
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ﴿3﴾
وما يدريك لعله يزكى
How would you know? Perhaps he might be purified,
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعُهُ اُلذِّكْرَىٰ﴿4﴾
أو يذكر فتنفعه الذكرى
or he might take heed and benefit from the reminder?
أَمَّا مَنِ اِسْتَغْنَىٰ﴿5﴾
أما من استغنى
But he who was indifferent,
فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَّدَّىٰ﴿6﴾
فأنت له تصدى
you give him your full attention,
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ﴿7﴾
وما عليك ألا يزكى
although you are not to be blamed if he does not purify himself.
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ﴿8﴾
وأما من جاءك يسعى
But as for the one who came to you striving [for purification],
وَهْوَ يَخْشَىٰ﴿9﴾
وهو يخشى
and he fears Allah,
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ﴿10﴾
فأنت عنه تلهى
you let yourself be distracted from him.
كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٞ﴿11﴾
كلا إنها تذكرة
No indeed; this is a reminder –
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُ﴿12﴾
فمن شاء ذكره
so whoever wills may give heed to it –
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ﴿13﴾
في صحف مكرمة
on venerable pages,
مَّرْفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِ﴿14﴾
مرفوعة مطهرة
exalted and purified,
بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٖ﴿15﴾
بأيدي سفرة
[preserved] in the hands of angel-scribes,
كِرَامِ بَرَرَةٖ﴿16﴾
كرام بررة
honorable and obedient.
قُتِلَ اَلْإِنسَٰنُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ﴿17﴾
قتل الإنسن ما أكفره
Woe to man; how ungrateful he is!
مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ﴿18﴾
من أي شيء خلقه
From what did He create him?
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ﴿19﴾
من نطفة خلقه فقدره
He created him from a drop of semen and proportioned him,
ثُمَّ اَلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ﴿20﴾
ثم السبيل يسره
then He made the way easy for him;
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ﴿21﴾
ثم أماته فأقبره
then He caused him to die and be buried;
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَا أَنشَرَهُ﴿22﴾
ثم إذا شا أنشره
then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ﴿23﴾
كلا لما يقض ما أمره
Yet he has not fulfilled what He commanded him.
فَلْيَنظُرِ اِلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ﴿24﴾
فلينظر الإنسن إلى طعامه
Let man consider the food he eats:
إِنَّا صَبَبْنَا اَلْمَآءَ صَبّاٗ﴿25﴾
إنا صببنا الماء صبا
How We pour down rainwater in torrents,
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا اَلْأَرْضَ شَقّاٗ﴿26﴾
ثم شققنا الأرض شقا
and cause the soil to split open [for sprouts],
فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبّاٗ﴿27﴾
فأنبتنا فيها حبا
and cause grains to grow in it,
وَعِنَباٗ وَقَضْباٗ﴿28﴾
وعنبا وقضبا
as well as grapes and fodder,
وَزَيْتُوناٗ وَنَخْلاٗ﴿29﴾
وزيتونا ونخلا
and olive trees and date palms,
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْباٗ﴿30﴾
وحدائق غلبا
and dense orchards,
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّاٗ﴿31﴾
وفكهة وأبا
and fruits and grass,
مَّتَٰعاٗ لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ﴿32﴾
متعا لكم ولأنعمكم
as provision for you and your livestock.
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ اِلصَّآخَّةُ﴿33﴾
فإذا جاءت الصاخة
But when the Deafening Blast comes,
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ اُلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ﴿34﴾
يوم يفر المرء من أخيه
on that Day everyone will flee from his brother,
وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ﴿35﴾
وأمه وأبيه
and from his mother and father,
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ﴿36﴾
وصحبته وبنيه
and from his wife and children.
لِكُلِّ اِمْرِيٕٖ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٖ شَأْنٞ يُغْنِيهِ﴿37﴾
لكل امري منهم يومئذ شأن يغنيه
On that day, everyone will have enough concern of his own.
وُجُوهٞ يَوْمَئِذٖ مُّسْفِرَةٞ﴿38﴾
وجوه يومئذ مسفرة
On that Day, some faces will be bright,
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٞ﴿39﴾
ضاحكة مستبشرة
cheerful and rejoicing;
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٞ﴿40﴾
ووجوه يومئذ عليها غبرة
while other faces will be dust-stained,
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ﴿41﴾
ترهقها قترة
covered in darkness.
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُلْكَفَرَةُ اُلْفَجَرَةُ﴿42﴾
أولئك هم الكفرة الفجرة
Such are the disbelievers, the wicked.
