إِذَا اَلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ﴿1﴾
إذا الشمس كورت
When the sun is wrapped up in darkness,
وَإِذَا اَلنُّجُومُ اُنكَدَرَتْ﴿2﴾
وإذا النجوم انكدرت
and when the stars fall down,
وَإِذَا اَلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ﴿3﴾
وإذا الجبال سيرت
and when the mountains are set in motion,
وَإِذَا اَلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ﴿4﴾
وإذا العشار عطلت
and when pregnant camels are left unattended,
وَإِذَا اَلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ﴿5﴾
وإذا الوحوش حشرت
and when wild beasts are gathered,
وَإِذَا اَلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ﴿6﴾
وإذا البحار سجرت
and when the seas are set on fire,
وَإِذَا اَلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ﴿7﴾
وإذا النفوس زوجت
and when the souls are sorted,
وَإِذَا اَلْمَوْءُدَةُ سُئِلَتْ﴿8﴾
وإذا الموءدة سئلت
and when the baby girl buried alive is asked,
بِأَيِّ ذَنبٖ قُتِلَتْ﴿9﴾
بأي ذنب قتلت
for what crime she was killed,
وَإِذَا اَلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ﴿10﴾
وإذا الصحف نشرت
and when records of deeds are spread open,
وَإِذَا اَلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ﴿11﴾
وإذا السماء كشطت
and when the sky is stripped away,
وَإِذَا اَلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ﴿12﴾
وإذا الجحيم سعرت
and when the Blazing Fire is flared up,
وَإِذَا اَلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ﴿13﴾
وإذا الجنة أزلفت
and when Paradise is brought near –
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٞ مَّا أَحْضَرَتْ﴿14﴾
علمت نفس ما أحضرت
then every soul will know what it has brought about.
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ﴿15﴾
فلا أقسم بالخنس
I swear by the receding stars,
اِلْجَوَارِ اِلْكُنَّسِ﴿16﴾
الجوار الكنس
that rise and hide,
وَاليْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ﴿17﴾
واليل إذا عسعس
and by the night as it departs,
وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ﴿18﴾
والصبح إذا تنفس
and by the day as it breaks –
إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٖ كَرِيمٖ﴿19﴾
إنه لقول رسول كريم
Indeed, this [Qur’an] is a word conveyed by a noble angel-messenger.
ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي اِلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٖ﴿20﴾
ذي قوة عند ذي العرش مكين
extremely powerful, highly revered by the Lord of the Throne,
مُّطَاعٖ ثَمَّ أَمِينٖ﴿21﴾
مطاع ثم أمين
obeyed there [by other angels] and trustworthy.
وَمَا صَٰحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٖ﴿22﴾
وما صحبكم بمجنون
Your fellow [i.e., the Prophet] is not a madman.
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِالْأُفُقِ اِلْمُبِينِ﴿23﴾
ولقد رءاه بالأفق المبين
He indeed saw him [i.e., Gabriel] on the clear horizon.
وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى اَلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٖ﴿24﴾
وما هو على الغيب بضنين
He does not withhold [knowledge of] the unseen.
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَٰنٖ رَّجِيمٖ﴿25﴾
وما هو بقول شيطن رجيم
This [Qur’an] is not the word of an accursed devil.
فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ﴿26﴾
فأين تذهبون
So which way are you going?
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٞ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ﴿27﴾
إن هو إلا ذكر للعلمين
It is but a reminder to the worlds,
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَنْ يَّسْتَقِيمَ﴿28﴾
لمن شاء منكم أن يستقيم
for those among you who wish to take the straight path.
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَّشَآءَ اَللَّهُ رَبُّ اُلْعَٰلَمِينَ﴿29﴾
وما تشاءون إلا أن يشاء الله رب العلمين
But you cannot wish except by the Will of Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
