الشَّمس

وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَيٰهَا﴿1﴾

والشمس وضحيها

By the sun and its brightness,

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَيٰهَا﴿2﴾

والقمر إذا تليها

and by the moon as it follows it,

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّيٰهَا﴿3﴾

والنهار إذا جليها

and by the day as it displays it,

وَاليْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَيٰهَا﴿4﴾

واليل إذا يغشيها

and by the night as it covers it,

وَالسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَيٰهَا﴿5﴾

والسماء وما بنيها

and by the sky and how He made it,

وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَيٰهَا﴿6﴾

والأرض وما طحيها

and by the earth and how He spread it,

وَنَفْسٖ وَمَا سَوَّيٰهَا﴿7﴾

ونفس وما سويها

and by the soul and how He fashioned it,

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَيٰهَا﴿8﴾

فألهمها فجورها وتقويها

then inspired it [to know] its wickedness and righteousness,

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّيٰهَا﴿9﴾

قد أفلح من زكيها

Indeed, he who purifies his soul will attain success,

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّيٰهَا﴿10﴾

وقد خاب من دسيها

and he who corrupts it will be doomed.

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَيٰهَا﴿11﴾

كذبت ثمود بطغويها

Thamūd rejected [the messenger] because of their transgression,

إِذِ اِنبَعَثَ أَشْقَيٰهَا﴿12﴾

إذ انبعث أشقيها

when the most wretched among them rose.

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اُللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اَللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا﴿13﴾

فقال لهم رسول الله ناقة الله وسقياها

Although the messenger of Allah warned them, “Hands off the she-camel of Allah and her drink!”

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّيٰهَا﴿14﴾

فكذبوه فعقروها فدمدم عليهم ربهم بذنبهم فسويها

Yet they rejected him and hamstrung her. So their Lord destroyed them for their sin and leveled them to the ground.

فَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَٰهَا﴿15﴾

فلا يخاف عقبها

And He has no fear of the consequences thereof.
