الطَّارق

وَالسَّمَآءِ وَالطَّارِقِ﴿1﴾

والسماء والطارق

By the sky and the night comer –

وَمَا أَدْرَيٰكَ مَا اَلطَّارِقُ﴿2﴾

وما أدريك ما الطارق

and how do you know what the night comer is?

اُلنَّجْمُ اُلثَّاقِبُ﴿3﴾

النجم الثاقب

It is the star of piercing brightness –

إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٖ لَّمَا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٞ﴿4﴾

إن كل نفس لما عليها حافظ

there is no soul except that there is a watcher over it.

فَلْيَنظُرِ اِلْإِنسَٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ﴿5﴾

فلينظر الإنسن مم خلق

Let man reflect on what he was created from.

خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٖ دَافِقٖ﴿6﴾

خلق من ماء دافق

He was created from a spurting fluid,

يَخْرُجُ مِن بَيْنِ اِلصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَآئِبِ﴿7﴾

يخرج من بين الصلب والترائب

emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِ لَقَادِرٞ﴿8﴾

إنه على رجعه لقادر

Indeed, Allah is able to bring him back to life.

يَوْمَ تُبْلَى اَلسَّرَآئِرُ﴿9﴾

يوم تبلى السرائر

On the Day when all secrets will be disclosed,

فَمَا لَهُ مِن قُوَّةٖ وَلَا نَاصِرٖ﴿10﴾

فما له من قوة ولا ناصر

he will then have no power, nor any helper.

وَالسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ اِلرَّجْعِ﴿11﴾

والسماء ذات الرجع

By the sky and its recurring rain,

وَالْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ اِلصَّدْعِ﴿12﴾

والأرض ذات الصدع

and by the earth that cracks open [with the sprout of plants],

إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلٞ فَصْلٞ﴿13﴾

إنه لقول فصل

Indeed, this [Qur’an] is a decisive word,

وَمَا هُوَ بِالْهَزْلِ﴿14﴾

وما هو بالهزل

which is not for amusement.

إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْداٗ﴿15﴾

إنهم يكيدون كيدا

Indeed, they are devising a plan.

وَأَكِيدُ كَيْداٗ﴿16﴾

وأكيد كيدا

I am too devising a plan.

فَمَهِّلِ اِلْكَٰفِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْداَ﴿17﴾

فمهل الكفرين أمهلهم رويدا

So bear with the disbelievers, and give them respite for a while.
